Low Stomach Acid

Pathology of Low Stomach Acid Related Diseases

Stomach acid is required for the absorption of nutrients and the control of undesirable microorganisms and it becomes the body's first line of defense against infections, effectively sterilizing your food. In addition, it is also required for the breakdown of protein in the stomach. However, its action on protein breakdown is only effected in the presence of pepsinogen where the two combines to form a very powerful enzyme called pepsin. Low stomach acid is called hypochlorhydria while its absence is referred to as achlorhydria. These two states have been associated with carcinoid tumours in the digestive tract. Half of the population above the age of 60 suffers from hypochlorhydria.

You must be concerned with low stomach acid because a lack of the acid will leave you unable to digest your food properly and this will also make you more vulnerable to infections. This condition leads to indigestion especially with high protein meals. Food allergies will arise because of the large amount of undigested protein molecules in the small intestine. The body cells such as in the pancreas need vitamins and minerals to produce enzymes to digest food. If there is indigestion, none of the nutrients will be available to feed the cells and thus these cells cannot produce the enzymes.

Symptoms of low stomach acid include burping, bad breath, flatulence, bloating, diarrhea, constipation and indigestion associated with protein rich foods. These undigested foods hang around in the small intestine, feeding the bacteria that live there. These bacteria produce gas and that is why there is bloating, digestive pain and flatulence.

In order to solve the problem, you need to do the following:

1. Take zinc supplement as zinc is critical to the proper functioning of body cells. The soil is heavily depleted of zinc. The production of stomach acid is dependent on the sufficient intake of zinc.

2. Avoid stress as this emotional state will suppress stomach acid.

3. A digestive enzyme supplement is required to assist in the digestion of food.

4. A daily dose of a multi vitamins and minerals tablet is required to assist in the production of enzymes.

5. Do not rush through your meals, and chew thoroughly.

  2. QUESTION:
Do Hydrochloric acid supplements really work for low stomach acid?
Whats better, the tablet or the capsule? One of the side effects of low stomach acid is itchy anus, what causes this?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, that's exactly what it's designed for. Hydrochloric Acid is the equivalent of stomach acid, so taking it at the end of the meal would be just like if your stomach released more acid to digest your food.
A capsule vs tablet is entirely personal preference. Most people tend to prefer capsules because they dissolve quicker and are easier to swallow.

I haven't personally heard of low stomach acid being an itchy anus, but it makes sense. If you have low stomach acid, your food won't all digest properly, so the undigested food would come out of the anus, which could irritate it more than feces.

Oh, and the reason it's called a "supplement" is that it's taken in addition to your diet... it is "supplementing" your food and what's already in your diet, not being a sole source of it. Your stomach already has Hydrochloric Acid in it, so you're just adding to it. It's the very definition of supplementing.

  5. QUESTION:
Can low stomach acid effect young adults?
Suspect I have low stomach acid which effects my digestion causing me to feel bloated, fatigued and lightheaded. This came on after a post viral infection much like Mono. Every time I eat I feel bloated and not right. Any one know anything about low stomach acid?

    • ANSWER:
Ok, I know what wrong with you. Your stomach doesn't have low stomach acid because your gastric juices in your stomach don't change (your ph level.) What has occured is that your body has became week becasue your body has spent all its energy fighting the viral infection, making your body weak. You have to drink a lot of liquids and eat a lot of soup to regain your body strength. Its not your stomach that is cauing this problem. You think it is but its actually the stomach that is telling you that it needs soup, liquids so it can help itself. If you feed wrong thingsd to th ebody, its obviously going to hurt. So eat a lot of soup (vegetable soup or tomatoe soup), and liquids or jello or orange juice or prunes and you should get a lot of sleep and you should be back to bnormal in a jiffy.
Hope you get better. Good luck
