Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
realisticly what are the chances of getting pregnant on birth control?
what are the chances that if you take your pill at precisely the same minute everyday that you would become pregnant? Does anyone have a story about an accidental pregnancy? while doing this?

    • ANSWER:
Birth control pills are very reliable at preventing pregnancy. However, nothing but abstinence is 100% effective. When used as directed the rate of effectiveness varies from 92-99%. In theory, taking the Pill precisely at the same minute of every day would probably guarantee the highest rate of success, but it is not likely possible for a human to do this. While I would never claim to have always taken my pill at precisely the same minute of every day, I do have a story about getting pregnant while using birth control pills. My husband and I used birth control pills throughout our early married years quite reliably preventing pregnancy until we went off them with the intent to conceive, which we did 3 times. We were married young (I was 18, he 19) and we had our kids when we were young with the plan that we would still be young when they all left the nest. They were born when I was 20, 23, and 26. After #3, I was not quite ready to think about a permanent form of birth control such as vasectomy or getting my tubes tied. My doctor approved my taking birth control pills for the time being since I had no history of problems. For 11 years I took birth control pills daily, always after I brushed my teeth before I went to bed. Granted, not always at the same minute, but generally within an hour of the previous pill. When I was 38 and our kids were 17, 15, and 12, I began to have some odd stomach pain whenever I ate and developed heartburn, something I had never had before. I went in for my regular yearly physical where my doctor suspicioned Irritable Bowel Syndrome as the cause of my stomach pain. In a rather blurred series of events, my doctor thought my cervix felt pregnant, I peed in a cup to have a pregnancy test done, it came back positive, and my doctor heard a heartbeat on the Doppler. I had not missed a period, although the one just before my appointment was shorter and lighter than usual. I had not taken any other medication that would have interfered with the Pill's effectiveness nor had I been sick with vomiting or diarrhea. An ultrasound showed I was 17 weeks along already and I had no idea I was pregnant. Our little surprise was born when her siblings were 18, 15, and 12. After that, my husband went in for a vasectomy! One nurse said my ovaries must only have been the size of pinheads after so many years of not ovulating. Everyone, even my doctor, was totally surprised I could have gotten pregnant after so many years on the Pill. Our kids are now 28, 26, 23, and 10. My husband and I have been married for 30 years, very happy to be welcoming only grandbabies into the family now.

I/'m 30 weeks pregnant. 3 days ago I ate a tad bit of cheese named Queso Fresco it was moist and had a slight sour smell. It was not labeled pasturized and infact warned if not handeled properly could contain bacteria. My friends fridge temp. Was not very cold. Today I'm feeling nausea, persistent heartburn, stomache ache almost vomited. nausea, persistent heartburn, stomache ache almost vomited. I don't know if its from my pregnancy alone or could be from listeria. With these symptoms this soon after possible exposure taking a blood test would it show up? Should I have anything to worry about? Anyone ever experience this infection or know of someone?
I've read symptoms show 3 to 70 days afterwards

  6. QUESTION:
I'm 37 weeks pregnant and fed up, any others at this stage???
    Hi All,

I'm massive, heavy, like a whale, my skin is pale and breaks out in spots, I haven't dyed my hair in months - it is thick and crap looking............. I feel like a breast instead of a 'glowing' pregnant woman.

I'm tired constantly and can't sleep due to position of baby, and it always starts kicking at midnight.

My toddler is militant and trashes the house all day, i have to bend down and pick everything up etc......................

help me............................ I need words of encouragement before I go bananas!!!

    Sophia

    • ANSWER:
oh me me me .. i am 37 weeks today... i cant walk properly anymore, takes me 2 minutes to walk to the bathroom, baby seems to be pressing down on my ar*e lol. I get out of breath walking for 30 seconds. Everything i eat gives me heartburn, i still have occasional nausea.

Turning in bed is AGONY!! everything hurts - inside legs, under bump and back.

I have a 22 month old toddler too and she is a mess making machine.. she has wrecked my cds and dvd collection, all the dvds are missing.. her toys are EVERYWHERE....it takes me a day to pick everything up and once i am on the floor it takes me 30 mins to get back up

and she poos like 4 times a day (sometimes) so i have to throw that in the mix. Her poos are pungent and can set off my nausea and vomiting

sometimes i have BH contractions like twice in 5 mins ... and they hurt...

when i finish peeing and stand up its like i never even peed - i need to go again. I pee about 5-6 times a night!

      (SINGING, waving candle )

"you are not alone, i am here with you ..."

  7. QUESTION:
Any idea what this could be while your pregnant?!?
I'm 30 weeks pregnant with my first.
Yesterday night out of no where I suddenly got a bad stomach ache as if though I had eaten something bad along with nausea close to vomiting. But just before I had those symptoms I had just drank a mini cup of half & half. I also have severe heartburn and am afraid it could be listeria for in the morning was still feeling sick with foul smelling gas.
3 days ago I had eaten some moist crumbly queso fresco from a friend and read it was not pasturized infact may carry bacteria. (I found that out later sneaking into her kitchen)
Idk what to think I definitely am going to talk to my o.b. but, can anyone tell me what it could be or is normal. I don't want to worry anymore

  8. QUESTION:
    Anyone else feel like this?
I'm 33 weeks pregnant and I have zero desire to eat. I have to force myself to eat periodically through the day just because I start feeling yucky. Between heartburn, vomiting, and just feeling like I'm gonna burst, I don't want anything. I can walk through the grocery store and not see one thing that looks good. I can stare at a menu for 30 minutes and everything sounds repulsive. Anyone else feel like this? Or should I bring this up to my dr thursday?
Thanks. I never had any morning sickness my first pregnancy, and this time I never got it until about 28 weeks. I usually throw up the little bit I'm able to eat. My first pregnancy all I wanted to do was eat. About the only 2 things I actually want are dr pepper and coffee, both give me heartburn.

    • ANSWER:
Pretty common late in pregnancy. Between the hormones and your baby taking up more space it can be tough. I know I felt that way with both pregnancies.

You can ask your doctor for something stronger for the heartburn. With both of my pregnancies I was on prescription strength acid reducers in my third trimester.

  9. QUESTION:
    Ok.. new things happening.. advice?
I posted this earlier today and got a lot of good responses:

I am 30 weeks pregnant and last week was in the hospital twice..They said I had preterm labor and gave me a total of 6 shots of terbutaline to stop contractions (which were 7 mins. apart). I had all of this too.....
    1. diarrhea for over a week..I couldn't even keep water in
    2. nausea that was very on and off but no vomiting
    3. intense lower back pain with tightening of uterus--but not painful
    4.pelvic pressure
    5. Even through all of this, I couldn't stop cleaning and cooking. I made like 5 cakes and 3 caseroles in one day.. and then didn't want to eat any of it.

since I've been out of the hospital for 2 days now, my diarrhea has slowed down to once a day.but I have new things happening....

    1. I don't feel hungry AT ALL but I know I have to eat for the baby. When I do I get horribly nauseaus.
    2. I feel extremely hot all the time, even though my air is on 74 now.
    3. I have been so tired I could barely keep my eyes open yesterday. Today is better but still very groggy. I slept for over 10 hours (I never do that) and am still exhausted.
    4. When I walk, I get a tightening in my uterus and very sharp pains in my vagina.
    5. my back pain has continued to get worse with still irregular contractions.
    6. My heartburn, which has always been slight, has been so unbearable it brings tears to my eyes.
I am just very afraid I won't make it until my scheduled c section around the 15th of july (no date is final as of yet). What do you think? did any of this happen to you before labor occurred?

****BUT NOW I've had worse back pain.. mostly on my left side that travels to my stomach and is a tightening still.. but not painful. It is just really uncomfortable and making me nauseas. ALSO. I noticed about an hour and a half ago that when I stand from sitting or laying down (cuz i've been trying to take it easy) that I feel something kinda watery leak but it doesn't trickle down my leg. It's made my pants and underwear so wet that I've already changed twice. I don't have pads because I always wore tampons and I'm sure I can't wear those now. What is going on? Please tell me my water hasn't broken..any suggestions or advice would be really appreciated. thanks

My husband is in the army and was deployed months ago. I moved back to my hometown to be close to family, because I knew I would need help after a c section. They didn't tell me to take it easy or anything. They said the diarrhea wasn't a virus or my white blood cell count would have been higher. so it was just something that had to work itself out of my system. They said if my contractions become regular or painful to come back in, otherwise to keep my appt with my dr on tuesday. They are not painful in my stomach, but my back is killing me. I also keep getting this weird sharp pains that shoot down my hips. I have no clue what ANY of this means because I had nothing at all when I was pregnant with my son. They had to induce me and do an emergency c section. I am basically new to the game-especially with labor pains. I don't want to keep going back to Labor and Delivery for nothing...I just don't know when I should be concerned. I was dilated to 2 last tuesday

  12. QUESTION:
Vomiting and diarrhea, 32 weeks pregnant?
I am currently 32 weeks pregnant and at about 2:30 this morning I woke up and ran to the bathroom to vomit, everything that was in my stomach came up. I couldnt get back to sleep because my stomach felt so sick, so I drank some water, then at about 7:15 am I puked a couple more times and a few minutes after that I had diarrhea. I havnt puked since, but I feel incredibly nauseous and have extremely bad heartburn right now, and the diarrhea is still continuing. I also have been having cramps in my abdomen, right above my belly button is where I feel the cramps the most. I also feel dehydrated, my mouth is completely dry and my lips are cracked, what could this be from??

    • ANSWER:
Hun, go make yourself a cold drink with ice and then take some immodum (anti-diarrhea medicine, safe for pregnancy) Keep those fluids going!

Also, if your too worried about call a doctor/mid wife because sometimes getting dehyrated can cause early labor!

I was really dehayrated and had this happen to me as well, They put an IV in, made me drink like 4-6 cups of icy water, anti diarrhea pill, lay down, and go on the nonstress test/plus contraction montier!

Please call your OB just in case your baby is stressed out from all this

  13. QUESTION:
    what sickness is this?
yesterday at 2am i woke up with severe upper stomach pain, about an hour later i vomitted, i threw up every 20-30 mins until 4am. Today I have been nauseous, stomach achey, week, and have been vommitting off and on.....

Can any one tell me what they think it is, and what medicines and/or home remedies can i take?

    • ANSWER:
It could be the flu or a virus, or food poisoning. It could also be acid reflux, which believe it or not doesn't always feel like your regular heartburn. For me it feels like I got punched in the gut and won't go away until it gets so bad I throw up...
It could also be a gallbladder issue. I had gallstones and would get pain just like you're describing and I would vomit a lot. A gallbladder problem won't necessarily be on the right side either, for me it was right in the middle. I would have never guessed it was gallstones until my doctor suggested it and they did an ultrasound.
I also have an acid reflux issue that feels just like the gallbladder, and it also makes me vomit. Luckily for me I'm pregnant so I basically just have to deal with it...
The only one that might have a home remedy would be an acid thing, so you could try taking tums or some other antacid. If it doesn't clear up by Monday, might as well go to a doctor.
      Hope you feel better!!!

  14. QUESTION:
I'm 39 weeks pregnant, are these signs of food poisoning?
I'm 39 weeks pregnant and tonight around 6:30 we ate seafood, I had fried gator tail and a jalapeno cheeseburger, but ate 2 of my husband's raw oysters (I've been told if you trust the source raw oysters can be ok). Then around 9:30 tonight I started getting really bad indigestion and heartburn, followed by nausea, then a quick trip to the bathroom to find out I had diarrhea. Then the baby started moving a lot, more than normal, until about 10 minutes ago. My temp is 96.8, so not a fever. I called the emergency room but they said they can't give medical advice, that I needed to call my dr's line, and I don't want to wake anyone up if this is nothing. So do you think I have food poisoning or just affected by all the spicy food? And can it cause serious problems with the baby?
Tinkerbella- thank you, that's what I was hoping to hear, because I've also had a lot of back pain and a few contractions since this morning, making me wonder if labor isn't right around the corner, and I've read also that your body will 'clean itself out'. So i've been hoping preparation was the cause of that, while the spicy food was causing the indigestion and movement. Because like I said I have no fever, no chills, no vomiting, no other signs. And I've had food poisoning before when I wasn't pregnant, and it was way worse than what I've had tonight. His thrashing around is what made me panic, but now that thats slowed down along with the other stuff I feel a lot more calm. Thank you for the reassurance.

    • ANSWER:
Those symptoms can all be explained by the fact you ate spicy, fried food. If you start getting bad stomach cramps, fever, chills, sweats or vomiting that is when you should worry about food poisoning. Sometimes when you are close to going into labour your body will "clean" itself out as well so you may be experiencing a little bit of that.
If you do get any other symptoms pointing to food poisoning you will need to get to the hospital as raw oysters (some, not all, it's hard to test all oysters for this bacteria) contain a bacteria in them that is only killed by heating, that can hurt both you and your baby.

  15. QUESTION:
    Is my heart in danger?
I am 27 years old and about 6 months pregnant. This is my third baby and it has been a hard pregnancy. I lost 30 pounds due to vomiting and still havent really gained much weight. My doctor is not too worried cause i am a little overweight to begin with. I also have diabetes. I was diagnosed after the birth of my last child in 2003. I have been having a lot of heart pain for the past couple weeks. It is only on my left side, near my armpit, and it does go in my arm or sometimes my neck. The pain i feel is different then i have ever felt.Meaning heartburn ect. It is a painful burning and sharp pain that usually doesnt last too long. My BP has always been good--usually on the lower side. But my heartrate has been on the faster side almost always. Usually 90-110. But now i am not only having pain but becoming out of breath and weak all the time and my HR is raising and is now usually between 130-160 often, even if i am not very active. Please help!

  16. QUESTION:
30 weeks pregnant and blood in my vomit?
i woke up in the night with really bad heartburn, that bad i threw up all acidy stuff from my stomach. about an hour before i was sick i reached over and had a heartburn tablet. it was dark and the tablets i have are all different colours (they are fruity flavoured) so i didnt see which colour i had, nor did i bother with guessing what the taste was, just wanted to get rid of the heartburn. when i threw up i had reddish stuff in it, which i presumed was blood as it defiantly tastes very metalically. if i did happen to pick up a strawberry tablet it would have been pink i think (but not 100 percent sure). what do you guys reckon? ive not had any thing else wrong with me apart from when i woke up it felt like i hadnt slept at all as im still extremly tired and ive not been sick again, it was only that once.

    • ANSWER:
You should just go to your doctor. It's hopefully and probably nothing serious.

  17. QUESTION:
I have seen some people talk about getting pregnant on the Pill...?
Can I ask what the symptoms were like? Were they different than if you weren't on the pill? Did you miss your period? or did you just have a feeling so you took a test? and Did you figure it out later than normal?

    • ANSWER:
My story...When I was 38 years old, our children were 18, 15, and 12. I had been sucessfully on birth control pills for 11 years with no problems. In November of 1996, I came down with an upper respiratory infection - basically a bad common head/chest cold. I went to the doc, but she said antibiotics wouldn't help and to take over the counter meds for symptoms. About a week later, I started feeling better but developed a funny thing in that whenever I ate, my stomach hurt. I pushed it to the back of my mind thinking it was a side-effect of my illness and started eating toast and soup since those set pretty well on my tummy most of the time. I never had nausea or vomiting. Just after Christmas I started having heartburn. My mom said we had family history of colon cancer and I really should get checked out. I had a regularly scheduled yearly physical in Feb. of 1997. I told my doctor of my stomach ailments and she thought probably Irritable Bowel Syndrome and she'd give me some meds before I left my appointment. As she was doing my pelvic exam she asked me when my last period was. I told her, but said it seemed a little lighter and shorter than normal. She seemed puzzled, which is never good for a doctor, as she said your cervix feels like you are pregnant. We both had a really good chuckle over that. I said "impossible" and she said there are some other things besides pregnancy that can cause that. So, first order of business was a pregnancy test since that is simple to rule out. I nearly fell naked off the exam table when the nurse brought in the positive result. My doc said some things can cause a false positive so she brought in the doppler machine. We were both stunned to silence to hear a little heartbeat clear as a bell. The days following are a bit of a blur, but I had an ultrasound showing I was 17 weeks along. I had had normal periods other than that one just before my physical. I had been pregnant 3 times before yet I had no idea I was pregnant this time. Other than stomach pain when eating and heartburn I had none of the other signs I had had with my other pregnancies. Even when taken correctly, the Pill is not 100% effective and my doctor said I was apparently just one of those in the 1 % or less category who get pregnant on the Pill. I had not missed any pills - after 11 years, taking them at the same time each night was ingrained in my routine. I had not been on antibiotics and none of the over the counter drugs interfere with the Pill's effectivness. After 3 kids and my youngest being 12, I had gained some weight so when I began to lose weight, I was happy about that. But, I had developed Gestational Diabetes and by the time I was full-term I actually weighed 25 pounds less than I had at my yearly physical in Feb. 1996. We are now a happy family of me, my husband of 30 years and our 4 children, now ages 28, 26, 23, and 10. Our oldest has been happily married for 5 years and they blessed us with a grandson in April. It is not the family I imagined we would be 15 years ago, but it seems right and I am not sure we could ever picture our family without our little surprise addition in it.

  18. QUESTION:
Did I take my pregnancy test too early?
    Hi there-
I am supoose to start my period this week and I haven't. Saturday night I had heartburn , and Sunday morning which was about 3/4 days ago- I awoke out of a very deep sleep..rolled over to tell me boyfriend I was sick- and didnt even have 30 seconds before I jummed out of bed rushing for the bathroom. I felt like I had to vommit ALOT- but only acid was coming up.. after I felt flu like- so I went to bed. I woke up after a few hours and felt perfectly fine. I have had nausia on and off- headaches- the sniffles (cold like) I get dizzy out of nowhere.. and it feels like I just road on a rollercoaster. I also am gettting motion sickness very easily. .stomache cramps.. and just feel well "FAT:" and bloated. Everytime I eat- I get a loss of appetite. I also am tired, but restlessness at the same time. Ahh.. so I took a test.. I am only a couple days late so far did have a period last month- but the test said negative. I still dont feel normal.. So u think I took the test too early?

    • ANSWER:
There are some pregnancy tests available over-the-counter that can give a positive result the first day after a missed period. However a negative isn't necessarily conclusive, you may still be pregnant but on the other hand a positive is a positive. You do have some very severe early symptoms though. You sound a bit dehydrated - especially with the headaches and if you are vomiting then it is important to keep your fluid levels up. Mucous levels do increase in pregnancy and that could explain the sniffles you are experiencing and the dizzyness - well blood pressure often decreases so make sure you eat well. All these symptoms are your body telling you what it needs (like iron-rich foods and protein).

  19. QUESTION:
Plan B - who has gotten pregnant after taking it?
    Need help!
On Feb. 22 my boyfriend and I had an oops with our condom. I didn't have any money and asked him to purchase the plan b for me (it's like at Walmart). He didn't purchase it until Feb. 24, 2 days later. I took the pill about 40 hours after the accident, but then 30-45 minutes later threw it up.

We then didn't have any options as to purchasing another pill, so we hoped that everything would turn out fine.
I did not have any symptoms like spotting, bleeding, or anything else listed on the package after taking the pill.
However, starting a week later on March 1, I started experiencing weird symptoms.

*EXTREME fatigue, laziness, and I can hardly walk without losing my breath, I also have to take frequent naps daily
*Horrible heartburn, and vomiting for hours at a time (it feels like I have the stomach flu, but no diarrhea)
    *Lower back pain
*Very annoying but not painful cramping in my lower abdomen and pelvic area *I have never cramped before in my life*
    *Very sore nipples and breasts
*I am apparently smelling things in the office that no one else can smell, and it's making me vomit/gag
*I am very moody (crying one minute and laughing the next for no reason)
And my period is due but not here
I took a pregnancy test and it came back negative, but according to plan b any symptoms shouldn't last for more than 2 days? Also, I didn't start having symptoms until a week later. I have had all these symptoms for 5 days now and they are not going away.

    So my questions are:
The package is very vague on the effective rate taken the second day AND after vomiting it back up
HAVE YOU EVER GOTTEN PREGNANT AFTER TAKING PLAN B? HAVE YOU GOTTEN PREGNANT AFTER VOMITING PLAN B?

HAVE YOU EVER GOTTEN PREGNANT TAKING PLAN B THE SECOND DAY?

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE ACTUAL EFFECTIVE RATES FOR PLAN B AFTER THE FIRST 24 HOURS? HAS ANYONE HAD SYMPTOMS LIKE THESE AFTER TAKING PLAN B? AND FINALLY, IS IT TOO SOON/HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED SYMPTOMS LIKE THESE AFTER TAKING PLAN B, OR DOES IT INDICATE PREGNANCY?

    THANKS!

    • ANSWER:

  20. QUESTION:
    Too Much Iron?
I am 32 weeks pregnant and anemic. I started taking my iron tablets this morning. They are 195mg!!!! After I took them I started feeling very nauseas and about 3 hours later I started vomiting. I have never been sick before in my pregnancy. I have thrown up 5 times total. I called my nurse and she said it was probably a stomach bug and not the iron, but I'm worried as know too much can be very dangerous.

If you are also taking iron, how high of a dosage are you taking?

    Did it make you sick?

    Should I still worry?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Did you read the label on the box, package or bottle? What's confusing about iron supplements is that the prescribed dosage (i.e. 195mg, 250mg, etc.) doesn't actually contain that much iron. After some research, I found that 195mg tablets generally contain 39mg of iron as ferrous sulfate. The recommended daily intake of iron for pregnant women is 27-30mg, so what you're taking isn't that much higher in content.

However, iron supplements can definitely upset your stomach, especially if you're taking them in addition to regular prenatal vitamins, which already contain a lot of iron. They are difficult to digest, can cause nausea, vomiting, constipation and heartburn. The best way to get iron that your body can readily absorb is from food - lean red meats, organ meats, poultry, fish, and shellfish are the best sources. See the website below for more dietary sources. Getting iron from the food you eat won't cause queasiness.

That said, I'm familiar with your situation since I, too, turned up with a low red blood count in my 7th month. My doctor prescribed a 250mg supplement twice a day (this particular tablet contained 45mg of ferrous sulfate). The thing was, my blood count was not THAT low. It was within 2 or 3 points of where it should have been. Being that I had a LOT of trouble with morning sickness in the beginning of my pregnancy - and was unable to take conventional prenatal vitamins until my 30th week or so, due to the sickness they caused me - I sought a second opinion on what my doctor prescribed. The second doctor I talked to was appalled that the first would have prescribed such a high dosage, and recommended that I first attempt to add iron rich foods into my diet before I started supplementing. And wouldn't you know, the next time my blood count was checked it came back normal. I never had to take any additional supplements, just my regular prenatal vitamin (which already contains 30mg iron).

Always listen to what your doctor tells you to do, but if you feel something just isn't right, find out from another source. If you can, get a reading on exactly how low your blood count is and find out exactly where it should be. That will give you some perspective on what kind of supplement you actually need. Good luck and congrats!

    • ANSWER:
Indocin (generic name is indomethacin) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces fever, pain and inflammation. Its been used for over 40 years as a anti-inflammatory. Indomethacin treats the pain, swelling and stiffness associated with arthritis, gout, bursitis or tendonitis.

It is similar to ibuprofen (Motrin) and naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve), but stronger.

Indomethacin works by reducing the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that the body uses to cause fever, pain and inflammation. Indomethacin blocks the enzymes that make prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase 1 and 2) and thereby reduces the levels of prostaglandins. As a result, fever, pain and inflammation are reduced. It is vaialble in a sustained (slow) release form (Indocin-SR). .

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, heartburn, rash, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. Indomethacin may cause or worsen stomach or intestinal bleeding or ulcers. It may lead to perforation of the intestine. Indomethacin also can increase blood pressure and decrease kidney function. Individuals who have nasal polyps or are allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDs should not use indomethacin because there is an increased risk of severe allergic reactions in these individuals.

Because it can be hard on the stomach, it should be taken with food or immediately after meals to prevent stomach upset. Also consume a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water unless your doctor directs you otherwise. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug. Sustained release or long acting preparations must be swallowed whole.

Azulfidine (Generic name: Sulfasalazine) is an anti-inflammatory medicine, primarily prescribed for the treatment ulcerative colitis . It is also used for RA as well.

The most ommon side effects may include: abdominal pain, anemia, bluish skin, fever, headache, hives, inflammation of the mouth, itching, lack of appetite, nausea, rash, stomach distress, vomiting. Note: If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Azulfidine, salicylates (aspirin), or other sulfa drugs, you should not take Azulfidine.

      Other possible issues:

Men taking Azulfidine may experience temporary infertility and a low sperm count.

Skin and urine may become yellow-orange in color while taking Azulfidine.

In addition, prolonged exposure to the sun should be avoided.

If Azulfidine is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Azulfidine with the following:

      Digoxin (Lanoxin)
      Folic acid (a B-complex vitamin)
      Methotrexate (Rheumatrex)
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Regarding dosages for RA, the usual dose of Azulfidine EN-tabs for adults is 2 grams a day, divided into smaller doses. Your doctor may have you start with a lower dose, then raise the dosage to 3 grams after 12 weeks. For children aged 6 and older, the typical recommended daily dosage is 30 to 50 milligrams per 2.2 pounds of body weight, up to a maximum of 2 grams, taken in 2 equally divided doses. To reduce the chance of digestive side effects and other reactions, the doctor will probably start with a fraction of the typical dose and build up to it over a period of weeks. Children under 6 should not take this medicine.

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like you could have an extreme case of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD for short . Read below and see if any of these symptoms fit your case. Stress can often make GERD symptoms much worse as well. In any case, you should consult a doctor to make sure you get the help you need. Living with daily nausea is no way to live!

      Chronic Nausea Could Be Gerd

NEW YORK, April 30 (Reuters) -- Are you suffering from chronic, unexplainable nausea? Ask your doctor to check for gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. While heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD, a condition in which stinging stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, other symptoms can include angina-like chest pain, coughing, wheezing, hoarseness, shortness of breath -- and now chronic nausea, according to a report in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

"In patients with unexplained nausea, gastroesophageal reflux disease should, therefore, be considered if results on standard tests are normal," reported authors Drs. Ronald Brzana and Kenneth Koch, of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The good news is that GERD-related nausea is treatable, with most patients showing improvement after taking medication such as ranitidine or omeprazole, drugs that block acid secretion, or cisapride, a drug that speeds up the passage of food through the stomach.

Brzana and Koch looked at 10 patients who had chronic nausea for periods ranging between three months and six years; six of the patients also vomited two to eight times per week. The cause of the problem was unknown and the patients had not responded to treatment with a variety of drugs. After a series of tests, the researchers found that all 10 patients had gastroesophageal reflux disease.

"After we extensively evaluated a group of patients with chronic intractable nausea, gastroesophageal reflux disease was the only abnormality we could find," the authors wrote.

While the study is limited because it only involved a handful of patients, doctors should still consider GERD after ruling out ulcers, stomach cancer, an obstruction, or pancreas or gallbladder problems as a cause of nausea, they concluded.

  24. QUESTION:
I'm 37 weeks pregnant woke up with severe heart burn and vomited stomach acid.?
Ok I am 37 weeks and 1 day pregnant. Since about 1 1/2 weeks ago I have had heartburn. Mostly when I lay down, or after meals. Well just about 30 minutes ago 4:00am I wake up with heartburn right out of my sleep... && feel like I'm going to puke. Then about 10 minutes ago I did, but it was just like stomach aid. Should I be worried? && could this be bad on my baby? And another thing I have the flu and a bad head cold all since 35 weeks, but was not sick once be for that. Am I ok? I told my doctor and she said/did nothing about it. please help... am I the only one? Am i going to be okay? More importantly is my child to be going to be ok? Any advice on what to do.... Please!!

    • ANSWER:
you are fine. There isn't really anything you can take for your flu/head cold unfortunately benadryl, sudafed, and tylenol are about it. as far as heart burn so severe that it woke you up and you vomited, NOT ABNORMAL. You and your baby are fine! You should sleep with your head propped up on some extra pillows though that will help relieve the heartburn. Don't drink milk to help your heartburn, it will actually make it worse (because it will cause your stomach to produce extra acid...). Take rolaids or tums as directed to help sooth you current heart burn but be advised they might not help TOO much. Also try not to eat less then 3 hours before you go to bed and always sleep with the upper half of your body elevated. Like I said it's not abnormal, you are fine and safe. You don't have much longer to go!

  27. QUESTION:
26 weeks pregnant and I think i have gallbladder problem.?
Since I found out I was pregnant I have had occasional pain on my right side right under my rib going all the way to my back. I thought it was just stretching or everything moving, so every time I went to the doctor for my check ups I would complain about what started out as just pressure. Every time my doctor would tell me "it's not really a normal pregnancy symptom, but it may just be for you." So I didn't really think anything of it.
I would get this pain mainly early morning (3am - 5am). And it would last anywhere from 15 mins to an hour. With the pressure being about a 2 or a 3 on a scale 0-10 of pain. It stopped for a couple months.

And now I am 26 weeks and the past two days I have been in excruciating pain on my right side. It is no longer a pressure but a constant sharp pain right under my rib that radiates to my back. Along with some heartburn and feeling the need to vomit. The pain started around 12 in the afternoon (no longer just early morning) and has lasted till now, and it is currently 5:30 am. (and I am still in pain as I type)

I can't lay down without it feeling like I can't breath, it hurts to stand and try to walk it off, and it hurts to sit because of my back. This pain is about a 6 or 7 on a scale of 0 to 10. Except for one point, I guess it was the peak of the "attack". That was about a 9, I was in tears.

Should I go to the ER? My next appointment to see my doctor isn't for another 2 weeks. What should I do? The only reason it makes me nervous is for my child, i don't want to put him in any danger. But i have read that there is really nothing they can do since I am pregnant. So at what point should I go to the ER?

Sorry so long! Will choose best answer!
And well duh, does this even sound like a gallbladder problem?

    • ANSWER:
i am currently 31 weeks pregnant and suffering the same thing for the last 2 months, the docs have told me sounds muscular, they have checked my urine for gall stone symptoms and none, i went in to the emergency other day in severe pain and they sent me home...and now on Monday they will be ultrasounding me to see if its kidney stones...i will let u know the outcome..i wish this was a helpful answer sorry..

  28. QUESTION:
Does anybody have any ideas about why I may be vomiting in my sleep? I am 38 weeks pregnant. ?
I do have an appointment to see my Midwife but it happened again last night and I was too worried to go back to sleep afterwards in case I choked. I have been having lots of heart palpitations but I thought that this was just due to pregnancy as I had them early on in my first pregnancy. I have also been quite breathless but again put this down to pregnancy as the baby's head is not yet engaged. While I am awake I have quite a lot of acid in my throat particularly when I am in the car? I have been using heartburn remedies for this which seem to work for a short while.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi there,
Like everyone else, I'd say it's acid reflux as the baby is pressing on your stomach. I have suffered with this since being about 30 weeks pregnant and I'm now 36 weeks (also had it in my first pregnancy). Once the baby engages, which should be soon, you'll have some relief. Until then, try whatever heartburn stuff you can get. Personally, after trying Rennies, Rap-eze, Gaviscon (in 2 flavours of fluid form, and in tablet form), zantac, tesco's own indigestion relief tablets and a few others, I get on best now with a fluid called Peptac, which was actually prescribed to me, but I think you can buy over the counter (it's like Gaviscon but thicker), and Remegel, which are chewy rather than chalky and they're like minty chewits.
I'd also advise keeping a food diary to figure what sets it off most - Anything with onions in makes me feel awful, not to mention greasy, spicy and sweet foods, acidic fruits and carbonated drinks. Try not to eat or drink anything in the 2 hours before bed, when you lie down, it tends to bring the acid up, so if you're stomach is empty, it helps.
Best of luck, you're nearly there!

  30. QUESTION:
Is it possible to be feeling pregnancy symptoms 1 week after conception?
I'm on the pill and missed the 1st pill in my pack. I threw it away started on Monday a pill short. Husband and I had sex a week ago cause I've missed pills before and never got pregnant. I'm feeling sick to my stomach (not enough to vomit, but enough to feel sick). I'm tired and having trouble concentrating at work. I also started to get heartburn (which I've never had except for once when I ate really hot Thai food about 6 yrs ago). I've been having to urinate every 30 minutes to an hour and haven't had much to drink. Lastly, I spotted yesterday for a quick moment (mostly brown/pink) and nothing more, but I'm still 3 weeks away from my period. I've never been pregnant before so I'm not sure if I am as well as I know these symptoms usually don't show up this early.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I need opinions. Has anyone had pregnancy symptoms start after only a week after conception? Is it medically possible or is something else going on with me?

    Thanks So Much Everyone!!!

    • ANSWER:
Well I was having symptoms one week to the day after. So it's very possible. However, you are having a LOT of symptoms. You really shouldn't be having that many at this point. Possibly sore breasts, trouble concentrating, and sickness, but you shouldn't need to urinate more yet.

You probably wouldn't have all of those either. At one week I felt a little sick and couldn't concentrate so well.

Breasts got very sore at two weeks.

Didn't begin urinating a lot for weeks.

      Good Luck!

  31. QUESTION:
TTC why do you never answer my question lol.......pregnant or not, just your opinions?
testing negative (two tests last week Walgreens brand)
I have a 38 day cycle was supposed to get my period on the 4th
Got no normal PMS symptoms that I get EVERY month
on the 5th had what looked like 2 tsp of brown sludge, thought here comes my period
on the 6th I had a tsp of bright red blood mixed with a little cervical mucus and nothing after that, my "period" just ended after 2 days of barely spotting
I know periods vary, but mine has never been like this and Im not stressed at all, I have had no change in diet or day to day activity at all.

since then, for the past 9-10 days....Ive been nauseas, it comes in waves of discomfort, not like Im going to vomit, just a yucky feeling in my tummy. Especially in a moving car or train, right after I smoke a cig, and when I lay on my stomach.....but at times Ill just be sitting down and it comes.
    Mild heartburn.
    bloated.
    Very gassy.
strange pain in right side (two days ago but hasn't returned)
and feeling hungry quicker than usual. Like its 9:30 AM and I usually don't eat till lunch, after this Im getting food because im so hungry my tummy feels like its eating itself.
and I don't know if heart rate has anything to do with pregnancy but my heart was beating abnormally fast last night.
(and no its not in my head because I didn't really consider even being pregnant because Ive been trying for a year and it hasn't happened yet so I wasn't looking for symptoms)

But my boobs don't seem sensitive at all.

I just don't understand, if Im not pregnant whats wrong with my insides?

I am going to the doctor next week before people say "why are you asking us" Im not stupid, I just want opinions
I said its NOT in my head, listen, Ive had pregnancy "scares" before and Ive never felt like this...and after a year ttc the hope of getting pregnant is just second nature, it doesn't phase me like that. All I know was I started feeling like this and I had to do math to figure if it was even remotely possible.

    • ANSWER:
ok first off..try this website that i used, well after the fact but it pinpointed for me the exact day i got pregnant bc of the timeline it gave me...its an ovulation calendar but a reliable one...

      http://www.momswhothink.com/index.php?option=com_womancalendar

i cant say whether i think you are or aren't bc i personally never had any spotting or blood when i got pregnant. i had a heavy period the month before and i tested on the average day i would have expected my next one to start and it came back positive. my intuition told me something was wrong bc i just felt 'off '. i was EXTREMELY TIRED and also got a yeast infection the week leading up to my missed period. i felt slightly bloated n gassy about 2 days b4 i tested but didnt have a difference in my eating habits. whats crazy is i was actually trying to get pregnant over a year ago and i gave up bc it seemed my body wasnt going to allow it to happen. i had a confirmed miscarriage about 6 months b4 i got pregnant and possibly a second....coming off of birth control is a nightmare trying to get your body back on track...its like you hit puberty all over again with the irregular periods and weird symptoms. but alll i do have to say is when i wasnt even expecting it to happen, thats when it did. i just remember thinking, after all this time and NOW of all times it happens. seriously for couples who are consciously trying, its like they think too much into whats going on and they end up stressing out their bodies...if you know your fertile time is coming up, dont stress it, dont even really think about what you Need to do, just do it and you will be surprised at what can happen when you least expect it...i'm proof ;o)

i hope nothing else is wrong with ya but it doesnt sound too threatening to me...maybe you are pregnant and you dont know it....
so try that website and do what i did and think back to whether you had sex during the days it says would have been your fertile days...if that is the case, i would test but dont get your hopes up bc depending on where you are if you are pregnant, a urine pregnancy test might not give you a positive so easily like mine did. if you still dont get your period by the time you go for your doctors appt, tell them you want a blood pregnancy test done bc you think you are...rule that out first b4 you start worrying about other underlying issues

  32. QUESTION:
Do you think I may pregnant or what do you think is wrong? URGENT!!!?
Yes I am Sexually active with my partner (Boyfriend of 3 years). We have been trying to get Pregnant for 8 months and no luck.We honestly Do not Know what is wrong, but recently as we remain sexually active in the past week I have been urinating very frequently which is totally not normal to me,,,I have had horrible headaches...Heartburn...Fatigue...I have been trying to Diet but I keep craving chocolate and its making me bloated....And yesterday After dinner I puked 3 times then felt fine and went to bed at 7:30 which isnt normal for me.Also.. My Boyfriend is getting very agitated with me because I have just been in horrible moods and very emotional.I think he suspects something....Tell me what you think:)

    • ANSWER:
Since you have been having unprotected sex, you could be pregnant. Usually the first symptom is a missed period, and women don't usually have problems with fatigue or nausea/vomiting until they're about 2-3 months along.

I suggest going to your local favorite drug store and getting yourself two HPTs. Take one immediately, and regardless of the results, take another one first thing in the morning. Pregnancy hormones are most concentrated in the urine overnight, so first morning's urination is usually the best way to get accurate results.

If you have not missed your period for the last month or two, however, you are probably not pregnant, and have either a stomach bug or food poisoning. If you are having regular periods but are still experiencing problems with vomiting and fatigue after another week, go and see your doctor.

Edited to add: With you being in high school and without the ability to independently support a child on your own, I strongly suggest you rethink your desire to get pregnant. Most children born to teen mothers end up in poverty, and most teen mothers end up as single mothers. Statistics show that 80% of teen mothers DO NOT marry the guy that got them pregnant. So, think about your choices very seriously before you bring a child into this world who isn't asking for sub-par standards of living, that you will be forcing them into.

  33. QUESTION:
I've had 2 periods this month..Is this a sign of me being pregnant?
I've never had 2 periods in one month before. My last period was January 2nd of this month it I thought it seemed normal. I wasn't supposed to start my next period until February 1st. I started yesterday (January 30). I am trying to conceive so I had sex this whole month during my ovulating week. I got my cards read and it said that I am either pregnant or I am about to be. I took a Dollar Tree Pregnancy test and it said it says negative. This so called period that I have started off pretty heavy last night but now it's getting light. I also have been eating a lot, urinating a lot, sleeping too much, my breasts are sore tender and heavy, I've had heartburn, headaches, and felt like vomiting. I don't know what to do...Any suggestions???

I hope I am pregnant =) It'll be our first child!
    I took a test Thursday Jan, 28th
My period comes every 31 days if not then it's 32 days. My mom had most of periods when she was pregnant with me..

    • ANSWER:
Your period may have just come a little early this month but there is still a chance that you might be pregnant based on the symptoms you have. When did you test for pregnancy? Maybe it was too early. Wait until a few more days and test again with your first morning urine and buy a good pregnancy test. The dollar store one will probably give you an accurate answer too but the other ones are more reliable. Good Luck, hope you are pregnant!!

What does this mean? Need some advice....?
I am now going on 11 days late and have taken 3(BFN) no-name brand pregnancy test with blue dye. And I took a First Response this morning (25) with FMU and got a BFN. I have a regular 30 day cycle and my last AF was March 18. I have never been this late ever. Could I still be pregnant? My symptoms are bloated, crampy like AF is going to start for about 2 weeks still hasn't come, hot but no temp (just a bit warmer than usual 99.6) frequent urination, major heartburn, nausea w/o vomiting, and exhaustion for the last two weeks. What is going on? Pregnant or not? BTW, I have an OB appt. this week on Thursday to do blood analysis. Forgot to mention, today I had a light brown discharge only after urination noticed after wiping sorry for tmi, last night dh and I had intercourse, what does the light brown discharge mean, Can I be pregant even though I am getting BFN's on hpt? Thanks for any advice and taking the time to read my question. Thanks again.
I have a 7month old precious little boy and my husband and I were not ttc. Being a busy mom I didnt even realized missed AF until 4 days pasted. Early signs and symptoms of pregnancy: Things you might notice before you start prenatal care
Could you be pregnant? Before you test, read this list of classic clues.
Are you pregnant? The proof is really in the pregnancy test. But you may suspect — or hope — that you're expecting, even before you miss a period, if you experience one or more of the following signs and symptoms of pregnancy. These early clues may begin in the first few weeks after conception.
      Tender, swollen breasts or nipples
One of the first physical changes of pregnancy is a change in the way your breasts feel. They may feel tender, tingly or sore. Or they may feel fuller and heavier. As early as two weeks after conception, your breasts start to grow and change in preparation for producing milk. The primary cause of these changes is increased production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Changes in your breasts are often most dramatic when you're pregnant for the first time.
      Fatigue
Many women feel wiped out during pregnancy, especially in the early stages. This may be nature's way of persuading moms-to-be to take extra naps, in preparation for the sleepless nights ahead. But there's also a physical reason for fatigue.
During the early weeks of pregnancy, your body is working hard — pumping out hormones and producing more blood to carry nutrients to your baby. To accommodate this increased blood flow, your heart pumps harder and faster. Plus, progesterone is a natural central nervous system depressant, so high levels of this hormone may make you sleepy. In addition, the possibility of pregnancy can bring about a range of feelings and concerns that may sap your energy and disturb sleep.
      Slight bleeding or cramping
Some women experience a small amount of spotting or bleeding very early in pregnancy, about 10 to 14 days after fertilization. Known as implantation bleeding, it happens when the fertilized egg first attaches to the lining of the uterus. This type of bleeding is usually a bit earlier, spottier and lighter in color than a usual period and doesn't last long.
Many women also experience cramping very early in pregnancy as the uterus begins to enlarge. These cramps are similar to menstrual cramps.
      Nausea with or without vomiting
Morning sickness is one of the telltale signs of early pregnancy. Most women feel some sickness around four to eight weeks of pregnancy, but the queasiness can begin as early as two weeks after conception.
Although nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is commonly called morning sickness, it can occur at any time of the day. It seems to stem from the rapidly rising levels of estrogen produced by the placenta and the fetus. These hormones cause the stomach to empty somewhat more slowly, which could be part of the problem. Pregnant women also have a heightened sense of smell, so a variety of odors — such as foods cooking, coffee, perfume or cigarette smoke — can trigger nausea.
      Food aversions or cravings
Turning up your nose at certain foods is often the first hint that you're pregnant. Even the smell of some foods may cause a wave of nausea in early pregnancy. One study suggests that pregnant women experience a unique aversion to coffee in the early weeks of pregnancy. Meat, dairy products and spicy foods are other common objects of repulsion.
Food cravings are common, too. Like most other symptoms of pregnancy, these food preferences can be chalked up to hormonal changes. Pregnant women typically find that their food tastes change somewhat, especially in the first trimester, when hormones have the strongest impact.
      Frequent urination
Many pregnant women find themselves running to the bathroom more often than usual. During the first trimester of pregnancy, this is caused by the enlarging uterus pushing on your bladder.
      Headaches
If you're pregnant, you may be troubled by frequent, mild headaches. Early in pregnancy, headaches may be the result of increased blood circulation caused by hormonal changes.
      Constipation
Constipation is another common early indication of pregnancy. An increase in progesterone causes digestion to slow down, so food passes more slowly through the gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to constipation.
      Mood swings
You're a no-nonsense kind of woman — so what's with this crying over Hallmark commercials? The flood of hormones in your body in early pregnancy can make you unusually emotional and weepy. Swings in your mood, from bliss to deep gloom, also are common, especially in the first trimester.
      Faintness and dizziness
It's common for pregnant women to be lightheaded or dizzy. These sensations usually result from circulatory changes as your blood vessels dilate and your blood pressure drops. Early in pregnancy, faint feelings may also be triggered by low blood sugar.
      Raised basal body temperature
Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your oral temperature when you first wake up in the morning. This temperature spikes slightly soon after ovulation and remains at that level until your next period. If you've been charting your BBT to determine when you ovulate, its continued elevation for more than two weeks may mean you're pregnant. In fact, BBT stays elevated throughout your pregnancy.
      Are you really pregnant?
Unfortunately, these signs and symptoms aren't unique to pregnancy. Some can indicate that you're getting sick or that your period is about to start. And, conversely, you can be pregnant without ever experiencing these symptoms.
Still, if you notice any of the tip-offs on this list, make plans to take a home pregnancy test, especially if you're not keeping track of your menstrual cycle or if it varies widely from one month to the next. Also take extra good care of yourself. You just might be taking care for two.

  37. QUESTION:
It starts with sulfur burps, then becomes vomiting and diarrhea... What is happening to me?
It started in January and has happened one day every month since. It starts out that I burp and it is an awful sulfur/rotten egg smell. Within 3 hours, I start vomiting and have diarrhea. The vomiting is violent and comes about every 30 minutes. The diarrhea is uncontrollable and comes about every 15 minutes. This goes on for about 6-8 hours. I have been to see a doctor and have even been taken to the emergency room and had shots of promethazine. This is not lactose intolerance, giardiasis or pylori. It doesn't follow any pattern of food or activity but comes almost exactly 2 weeks after menses everytime. I have seen people with similar symptoms but doctors have ruled out all the diagnosis I have heard so far. Anyone out there have any idea? I take several medications for type 2 diabetes and fibromyalgia but have taken them for many years. I used to get cortisone shots in my back but have not since last year.

    • ANSWER:
I, too, have experienced this without diagnosis but there are some similarities between what you describe and my own experiences. I am a Type 1 Diabetic of 23 years and currently pregnant. I have this intermittantly with gas that also smells of sulfur. Do some research on gastroparesis as what I have researched so far gives a possible explanation beyond the other diagnoses that I, too, have looked into. Gastroparesis can be affected by fluctuating hormones during pregnancy and it wouldn't be a far stretch that it would be affected by one's menstrual cycle either. I had my last attack 2 days ago and noted that I have been eating a high fiber diet consisting of fruits and veggies that did not digest as expected.

Signs and symptoms of gastroparesis are

      heartburn
      pain in the upper abdomen
      nausea
vomiting of undigested food—sometimes several hours after a meal
early feeling of fullness after only a few bites of food
weight loss due to poor absorption of nutrients or low calorie intake
      abdominal bloating
high and low blood glucose levels
      lack of appetite
      gastroesophageal reflux
      spasms in the stomach area
Eating solid foods, high-fiber foods such as raw fruits and vegetables, fatty foods, or drinks high in fat or carbonation may contribute to these symptoms.

Check out this website and talk to your endocrinologist about testing for gastroparesis.

  38. QUESTION:
    Can I be pregnant?
My period ended Nov. 26 and I had unprotected sex on Nov. 27 thru Nov. 30. I was bleeding very light Dec. 1 uptill the 15th of this month. My periods are never actually heavy enough to wear a pad. But they are irregular. However my back hurts, I am sleepy all the time, my breast where the first thing I actually notice first. They hurt a lot especially now as days progresses. I am not expecting my period soon being that my November and December periods ran into each other, til January usually by the second week. When should I test and Could I be pregnant.

My boyfriend has been eating and sleeping a lot lately. And we both get these toothaches that comes and goes.

    • ANSWER:
you can test on december 27th that will be one month since you had sex in november or the 30th either one will be one month. which would make you 4 weeks pregnant on either of those days. the best test to use is first response and you can take it 5 days before your missed period or in your case 5 days before the dates you had sex. you can take the test on monday and that will be 5 days before the 27th or on the 26th which will be 5 days before the second day you had sex. buy a box with 2-3 in it so you can retest. take the test the morning after you buy it the first morning urine usually has the highest concentration of hcg (the pregnancy hormone) in it. and 2 days after the 30th you can use any test out there and it should give you a right answer. but there is always a chance it will be wrong so your best bet would be to make a doctors appointment today or after christmas to get a blood test to see if you are.

Your period stops or becomes very light.
You may feel nausea or queasiness. Some women vomit. ("Morning sickness" can happen any time of day -- it may help to eat small meals throughout the day, snack on crackers or toast, or drink juice or lemonade.)
Your breasts swell and may be tender.
Your nipples and the area around the nipples (areola) get darker and broader.
You have to urinate more often.
      You feel tired.
You may become constipated and have heartburn (Tums may help).
      You may have headaches.
You experience mood swings -- feel angry, sad, or happy for no reason.
if you are exhibiting pregnancy symptoms it is important that you do a pregnancy test right away. But what kind of test should you use? Can you really rely on those home pregnancy tests or do you have to traipse all the way to your doctors office to find out the results? Well, this article will give you the lowdown on both home and clinic pregnancy tests. Avoid the hassle of repeated tests and false positives by finding out how pregnancy tests work and how you can be sure to get accurate results.
How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?
Pregnancy tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). hCG is a hormone found only in pregnant women. It is produced by cells in the uterus and is responsible for signaling the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone to help your fetus grow. hCG levels continue to rise as your pregnancy progresses. Both urine and blood pregnancy tests can detect hCG.
      Types of Pregnancy Tests
There are two main types of pregnancy tests. Both are commonly used to detect pregnancy.
      The Urine Test
The urine pregnancy test is one of the most popular ways to detect pregnancy. It works by detecting levels of hCG in the urine. Home pregnancy tests are actually urine tests that can be performed in the privacy of your own home. There are a wide variety of urine pregnancy tests available on the market today. Each test ranges in sensitivity, with some urine tests being able to detect hCG levels as low as 15 ml/u.
Performing a Home Pregnancy Urine Test
A home pregnancy test is pretty easy to perform, though each test varies in procedure. Be sure to read the instructions included with the test before you use it. Also check to make sure that the expiration date hasnt passed. Most urine tests come with a testing strip which, when exposed to urine, detects the presence of hCG.
Remove the test strip from the package.
Insert the test strip in your urine stream or dip the strip into a cup of urine (follow the instructions on the box).
Wait for the indicated time (usually a minute or two).
The test strip should have changed colors or be displaying a symbol that alerts you to whether you are pregnant or not.
      The Blood Test
Pregnancy blood tests are performed at your doctors office or health clinic. They detect pregnancy by measuring hCG levels in your blood. There are actually two types of pregnancy blood tests:
Quantitative Blood Test: The quantitative blood test detects pregnancy by measuring the exact amount of hCG in your bloodstream. It can also be used to detect how far along you are in your pregnancy.
Qualitative Blood Test: The qualitative blood test detects pregnancy by indicating the presence of hCG in your blood. It does not measure your hCG levels, and only provides a yes or no answer as to whether or not you are pregnant.
      Performing a Blood Test
Blood pregnancy tests are performed by health care professionals in an office or a clinic. It is just like a simple blood test:
A spot on your arm will be cleaned with alcohol.
A needle is inserted into your arm.
Blood is drawn from the needle into a little tube.
The tube is sent to a laboratory where it will be tested. Pregnancy test results typically take a day or two.
      Pregnancy Test Accuracy
The accuracy of pregnancy tests has improved over the years. Both urine and blood pregnancy tests are surprisingly accurate in fact, they claim to produce results that are 97% to 99% accurate. Of course, mistakes can happen and it accuracy often depends on how the test was performed.
      Home Pregnancy Tests
Home pregnancy tests are usually about 97% accurate, but this varies from brand to brand. In order to get the most accurate results, it is a good idea to wait for about a week after your period is due before testing. This allows more hCG to build up in your urine, which will allow for a more accurate test. Some urine tests can be used on the first day that your period is due, however, it is unlikely that you will achieve that 97% accuracy rate if you test so early. It is best to perform a urine test in the morning, before you drink or eat. This will allow for a buildup of any hCG in your urine.
      Clinic Tests
Blood tests performed at your clinic have a 99% accuracy rate and can detect pregnancy earlier than most urine tests. Blood tests can be performed 7 days after you ovulate (which is about a week before your period is due) and still provide accurate results. Sometimes, lab oversights can affect the accuracy of results, however this is rare.
      False Results
It is possible to receive false results, both positive and negative, from your urine or blood pregnancy test.
If you get a false positive from a home pregnancy test, it is usually the result of faulty test strips. Most home pregnancy tests now have an indicator that shows whether or not the test is working correctly. If you leave your pregnancy test too long before checking it, this can also cause a false positive. Eventually, the urine will soak through the test, exposing the chemical strip that indicates pregnancy. Be sure to follow the instructions as closely as possible.
False negative pregnancy tests are also possible and typically occur with early pregnancy tests. If you test too early you may not have enough hCG in your urine or blood to indicate pregnancy. It is important to repeat your pregnancy test again a few days later, even if you test negative

  40. QUESTION:
How Bad Did Your Boobs Hurt When You Were Pregnant?
Fyi i can test tomorrow, we all know how this waiting game goes, long, drawn out. Anyways my husband and I are TTC its been 16 months since we started trying, i definatly know how i feel before i start my period and this is nothing like it. my boobs never hurt with PMS and for about a week now ive been noticing some discomfort, well today they are full blown killing me! with my first son my first symptom was my boobs being in about this much pain and i was about 3 weeks when that started. Also im bloated, feel pregnant, completly exhausted, same as i did with my first
So my question is, How bad did your boobs hurt
What were your first symptoms and how early on did they start?
when did you get a positive pregnancy result?
    *ALSO*
If you have more than one child were your symptoms the same the second time around or completly different?
    (I never had morning sickness)

    • ANSWER:
      Hi :)

      1) My boobs were sore at first, I mean I could notice they were tender when I was walking, but it wasn't horrible. They don't hurt anymore. My nipples were the one thing that was the most miserable, they felt raw, and still do and I'm 17 weeks pregnant.

      2) My first symptoms were brown spotting (implantation bleeding), frequent urination, food aversions (eew I would dry heave at the smell of bread and sweets, and I used to love them! If I couldn't control it, I'd vomit) food cravings, late night heartburn (which sometimes made me vomit) and fatigue! I was SO tired I could go to bed at 10:30pm and sleep until 1pm with no problem! (When I wasn't waking up every 30 minutes to pee haha).

      3) I had my first positive pregnancy test (followed by 5 more lol) around 14DPO. I noticed implantation bleeding from 11-13DPO though, which tipped me off.

I hope this helps, and I hope your son is going to be a big brother soon! That'd be so fun, best of luck to you hun!

  41. QUESTION:
Can I be pregnant or I want a baby to much?
    Hi all,

I came of the pill on 22 of September after only one year and half of use. On 26th I had some bleeding; we tried to conceive until 9th of October. No intercourse since than because I had a rush from epilating. It’s 30th of October, no period. I feel big and my trousers look smaller; if I press my tummy with the finger it is really hard, just one of my nipples hurts, but not very bad. I need to go to the toilet, for no 2, quite often, last week I went too often and this week constipated. And yes I’m a bit more gassy than usual. No other symptoms. I feel that I want put my pyjama on and sleep all the time. I took a pregnancy test on 26th in the evening but it was negative. What’s going on? Can I be pregnant or I want a baby to much?

    Many thanks

    • ANSWER:
Some women feel certain they're pregnant at the moment of conception. Others don't believe the news until they have a positive pregnancy test—or two. For most women, a missed period is an early sign of pregnancy. Here are some other pregnancy symptoms:

Breast changes. Tenderness and enlargement can occur as early as one week after conception. You also may notice the areolas, or rings around your nipples, darken and veins become more visible.

Nausea and vomiting. Morning sickness can occur anytime, day or night, and may begin one or two weeks after conception.

Fatigue. Although this is common in the first weeks, it often continues into your first trimester and may last throughout your pregnancy.

Slight spotting or cramping. About eight to 10 days following ovulation, when the embryo attaches to the uterus lining, you may experience a light pink spotting. It usually comes earlier than your expected period and is not as red or heavy.

Frequent urination. About six to eight weeks after conception, your uterus starts to exert pressure on your bladder. This means you may feel the need to use the bathroom more often.

Other signs. Other early signs of pregnancy include: constipation, elevated body temperature, headaches, dizziness, backaches, lower abdominal cramps, excessive salivation, heartburn, and food cravings.
      Take a pregnancy test—or two

Early pregnancy symptoms can be misleading. There are many possible reasons for how you're feeling. If you think you're pregnant, take a home pregnancy urine test. About 10 to 14 days after conception—or about a day after a missed period—a urine test can detect the pregnancy hormone hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin).

Pregnancy tests aren't foolproof. Sometimes, you get a negative test when you're pregnant, or a false positive, showing you're pregnant when you're not. Consider taking the test a week later to double-check the results.

      Confirm the results
Follow up with your doctor and have a medical exam to confirm the pregnancy and get on track with prenatal care. In the doctor's office you can take a blood pregnancy test as early as 8 to 10 days after conception to detect hCG.

The ultimate positive sign, of course, is seeing the fetus. With transvaginal sonography, it’s possible to identify the gestational sac (the fluid-filled structure that will develop into the fetus) about five weeks after the last menstrual period, and about two weeks later, the beating of the fetal heart can be seen.

  42. QUESTION:
If Im not pregnant, what could be causing this?
I keep getting negative tests, I have a busy work life and can't take off to go to the doctor although if this continues ill have to....So I want to know by opinion, what could this be if Im not pregnant.

4 weeks ago, no PMS symptoms
3 weeks ago, period makes its arrival nearly on time, but the first day it was what I call 2 tsp of brown sludge, the next day its about a tsp of bright blood mixed in what looked like cervical mucus....and then nothing, that was the end of it

2 weeks ago and continueing- Ive tried to ignor a yucky feeling inside of me, an uneasiness in my stomach. TONS of gas, constant waves of nausea that last for hours but never feel like Im going to vomit, small spells of heartburn, light cramps. and the oddest, a strange pulsing/stabbing pain on the right side of my stomach that come quickly and painfully and are gone within seconds. I know it sounds like a tummy virus, but I don't feel sick, I just feel TERRIBLY uncomfortable. I haven't been eating anything outside of my normal diet, and no one I know has a stomach virus.

On the other hand, my boobs aren't tender
I did bleed around my period time, even if it was strangely small amounts

like I said, I keep getting negative tests (I would be 25-30 dpo now) I test in the morning first thing

    • ANSWER:
Your back muscles are tightening up from the added pressure and as they do they can press into the nerves going to your organs as they leave the spine. Pressure on the nerves to your stomach would cause it to release more gastric acid to burn your stomach lining, which, as you dr. threw out there, would be your heartburn. He just doesn't realize how painful and unsettling this pain can be. To get rid of the pains you have to free up your back muscles to release the tight ones pressing into those nerves and here's how to free them up:
      Back:
(do while sitting on a chair)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front, and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm as straight as possible. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, then release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

  44. QUESTION:
Please answer...if Im not pregnant...whats going on?

I did bleed around my period time, even if it was strangely small amounts

like I said, I keep getting negative tests (I would be 25-30 dpo now) I test in the morning first thing
so what else could this be or could I still be pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
i don't know what else it could be..yes you could still be pregnant..id go get a blood test if you could or maybe just call your doctor and ask if they know wha else is cause it ..even though he still might want to see you.

none of my discomfort is unbearable, the stabbing pains actually only happened a few times yesterday and hasn't returned.
The nausea goes in and out, I don't think its "in my head" because I keep thinking Im not pregnant and then my body starts acting up making me think there is a possibility (rather than me sitting there waiting for something to happen and saying Ah-Ha! Im pregnant)

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you are not getting a positive and are pregnant, or it could be a ovarian cyst. I would wait and see if you get a period this month if not I would make a dr. appointment because if there is something wrong and you are TTC you should find out right away!

  46. QUESTION:
Please answer my question. I'm confused !?
Me and my husband are trying for a baby ever since we got married. Its been 5 months now.
We had intercourse on 14th, 15th and 16th of April, and then on 17th April I got my period, which was 13 days late (my period before that was on 4th March). My period was light, lasting only 2 days. Then we had intercourse on 29th, 30th Apr and 3rd May. I again had my period on the night of 4th May. I'm very confused because this time, I just had spotting on the 1st day, and a light flow (once) on the 2nd day, and I was clean all day after that. Then on the 3rd day also it was a light flow (once) and clean after that, and little spotting on the 4th day.
I'd like to mention here, that on 26th April, I felt extremely light headed at night, to the point that I felt the room spinning even with my eyes closed. I also had an urge to vomit but nothing came out. I felt no such thing after that. On 1st May, I puked in the car while we were coming back after visiting some place, but I felt that it was due to driving uphill in circles. And on 4th May, I was feeling hungry again and again, like half an hour after having proper breakfast, lunch and dinner. I ate cookies to fill my tummy but still I felt hungry. After that, when I got my period, I didn't feel any such thing.
On 8th May, when I woke up in the morning, I was having an extreme headache and I was vomiting on an empty stomach. I didn't feel like eating anything and whatever I ate, made me vomit. I took a pain killer and slept. When I woke up later that day, I was much better, and had lunch and dinner also. Also, I'm feeling slight heartburn, even though I'm not having heavy meals.
Now, I'm quite confused if I'm pregnant or not, cuz I thought maybe my period on 4th May was implantation bleeding? Can anybody help me?
Also I think, I'm getting some kind of white/transparent discharge while urinating, and I've been having dull pain (on and off) in my uterus area since the last 2 weeks. I haven't been feeling hungry at all, and sometimes I have an extremely light feeling that I need to vomit but it goes away and even when I eat just a little, I feel extremely full. When I bend down, I feel pressure in my abdominal area, and yesterday after intercourse, I felt as if suddenly my tummy was full of something, I felt a bit pressure also. I haven't been having morning sickness, nausea, breast tenderness or anything else, just these above mentioned signs.
About my hunger, I am not feeling hungry nowadays but sometimes I feel like eating a lot. And I sometimes have lower back pain also, when I sit too much.
I could wait for my period in June, but I just want to know whether what ever I'm feeling could be signs of early pregnancy? Like 1 month or less?

How was/is your health during pregnancy ?
Just curious how you coped or are coping during the 9 months of pregnancy.
Glowing with health or feel like you've been in a boxing ring?
For me being pregnant was awful and my immune system went down like a ton of bricks. I had colds, bronchitis, scabies, eczema, infected eczema, horrendous toothache and my skin flared up so bad towards the end I had fluid around my knees and feet and my arms and legs in bandages.
Then your average backache, piles, and tiredness.
How are you girls coping or did cope at the time?
I'll just add, I had no morning sickness and felt great up until 6 months then suddenly just fell to bits!
Not long now Lynne, hang in there :)

    • ANSWER:
All my pregnancies have been different. The first one i couldn't keep any food down and had a big rash up until about 24 weeks then i felt great. Second pregnancy i was pretty healthy all way through except chronic heart burn. This time i started off fine but as soon as i hit 30 weeks i have felt rubbish. So tired all time, pains everywhere, no sleeping, vomiting, constant heartburn, aching knees. Not long to go now only 9 more days :D :D

I recently got on yaz to regulate my periods but from the other medicines im taking it makes the actual birth control ineffective. The only purpose is to give me a regular period. Not to prevent pregnancy. So I got on it in about December , and everything was going just as suppose to. I got my period every month. At the end of Feb . the last day of my period, i had unprotected sex, only one time. Here comes March 21st and my period still hadn't came at that point it had been almost one month . I had a horrible migrane, couldn't stop throwing up, couldn't breathe , was extremely hot , sweating uncontrollably. Ive never been so sick in my life, i was in tears. I had to endure this untill i finally was able to fall asleep. The next day it was about half as bad, but still not as bad thank god.

-Food Cravings, or Aversions to Foods.

  49. QUESTION:
    what do you think????
Ok here it goes..... LMP March 30. sensitive nipples on and off for 2 weeks now, more tired during the day, increased discharge (white, watery to creamy), heartburn almost daily, cramping in lower abdomen almost daily for almost a week and a half now, Increased appitite (and cravings)....Got urine test done t gyno (was neg) got blood test (get result tomorrow) What do you think the results will be from symptoms above? Positive or Negative????

    • ANSWER:
honestly i think u have a possibility of being pregnant..i was on birth control pills and i had my period for the first 5 months of my pregnancy and every urine test i took came out negative it wasnt until i took a blood test that i found out i was pregnant..so here is a list of the top 10 earliest signs of pregnancy!!

      10. Tender, swollen breasts
One of the early signs of pregnancy is sensitive, sore breasts caused by increasing levels of hormones. The soreness may feel like an exaggerated version of how your breasts feel before your period. Your discomfort should diminish significantly after the first trimester, as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes.

      9. Fatigue
Feeling tired all of a sudden? No, make that exhausted. No one knows for sure what causes early pregnancy fatigue, but it's possible that rapidly increasing levels of the hormone progesterone are contributing to your sleepiness.

You should start to feel more energetic once you hit your second trimester, although fatigue usually returns late in pregnancy when you're carrying around a lot more weight and some of the common discomforts of pregnancy make it more difficult to get a good night's sleep.

      8. Implantation bleeding
Some women have a small amount of vaginal bleeding around 11 or 12 days after conception (close to the time you might notice a missed period). The bleeding may be caused by the fertilized egg burrowing into the blood-rich lining of your uterus — a process that starts just six days after fertilization — but no one knows for sure.

The bleeding is very light (appearing as red spotting or pink or reddish-brown staining) and lasts only a day or two. (Let your practitioner know if you notice any bleeding or spotting, particularly if it's accompanied by pain, since this can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy.)

      7. Nausea or vomiting
If you're like most women, morning sickness won't hit until about a month after conception. (A lucky few escape it altogether.) But some women do start to feel queasy a bit earlier. And not just in the morning, either — pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting can be a problem morning, noon, or night.

About half of women with nausea feel complete relief by the beginning of the second trimester. For most others it takes another month or so for the queasiness to ease up.

      6. Increased sensitivity to odors
If you're newly pregnant, it's not uncommon to feel repelled by the smell of a bologna sandwich or cup of coffee and for certain aromas to trigger your gag reflex. Though no one knows for sure, this may be a side effect of rapidly increasing amounts of estrogen in your system. You may also find that certain foods you used to enjoy are suddenly completely repulsive to you.

      5. Abdominal bloating
Hormonal changes in early pregnancy may leave you feeling bloated, similar to the feeling some women have just before their period arrives. That's why your clothes may feel snugger than usual at the waistline, even early on when your uterus is still quite small.

      4. Frequent urination
Shortly after you become pregnant, you may find yourself hurrying to the bathroom all the time. Why? Mostly because during pregnancy the amount of blood and other fluids in your body increases, which leads to extra fluid being processed by your kidneys and ending up in your bladder.

This symptom may start as early as six weeks into your first trimester and continue or worsen as your pregnancy progresses and your growing baby exerts more pressure on your bladder.

      3. A missed period
If you're usually pretty regular and your period doesn't arrive on time, you'll probably take a pregnancy test long before you notice any of the above symptoms. But if you're not regular or you're not keeping track of your cycle, nausea and breast tenderness and extra trips to the bathroom may signal pregnancy before you realize you didn't get your period.

      2. Your basal body temperature stays high
If you've been charting your basal body temperature and you see that your temperature has stayed elevated for 18 days in a row, you're probably pregnant.

      1. The proof: A positive home pregnancy test
In spite of what you might read on the box, many home pregnancy tests are not sensitive enough to detect most pregnancies until about a week after a missed period. So if you decide to take one earlier than that and get a negative result, try again in a few days.

Once you've gotten a positive result, make an appointment with your practitioner.

  50. QUESTION:
I had unprotected sex a day after my period….. Could I be pregnant?
My last period was in September 25-30 and I had sex in October 1st and 2nd. I missed my period for October and now I’m waiting to see if I get my period this month. Personally I don’t think I’m pregnant but friends that have kids told me they think I am but I’m not sure because I don’t have the symptoms of a pregnant woman, or I don’t think I do. The only symptoms out of the ordinary that I have are nausea (for a few week at first), headaches (had gotten rely painful it causes nausea but not vomiting), a little more tired, heartburn (gat them once in a while but go away quickly), and constipation, and sometimes I get cramp likes but they are not as strong and I don’t get my period.
Vel got the home pregnancy test Monday came out negative

    • ANSWER:
You had just had a period...any egg that you had released during ovulation was flushed out when you had you're period!! Highly unlikely that you would be pregnant. The symptoms you are describing arent necessarily related to pregnancy!! Take a pregnancy test 10 days after missing a period.
